Staff Sergeant Jimmy Hill,
U.S. Marine Corps (Retired) - the current Commanding Officer
of the Capital Area Young Marines, Austin and Central Texas’
local unit for the Young Marines of the Marine Corps League
- is no stranger to Central Texas. Born in Temple and raised
in Waco, he attended Texas A&M University where he was a
member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band and the Aggie Corps
of Cadets. When the Dean of Mechanical Engineering suggested
that Jimmy just didn’t have the knack for academic pursuits,
Mr. Hill enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in June
1983.
While he was in the Marine Corps, Jimmy worked primarily as a COBOL Programmer and as a Local Area Network Specialist. He rose in rank from Private to Staff Sergeant and served all over the nation and the world. His duty stations included San Diego, California; Quantico, Virginia; Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; Okinawa, Japan; Pohang, South Korea; Camp Pendleton, California; and Barstow, California. Jimmy is a nine time Expert Rifleman, a seven time Expert Pistol shooter, and earned the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal during his twenty years of active duty. An active skier and a keen military historian, Jimmy used his time in the Marine Corps to ski all over the USA and to tour almost all of the major Civil War battle sites. In addition, he decided to prove the Dean back at A&M wrong. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems from Park University in 2000 during his final tour at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow, California. Staff Sergeant Hill retired from the Marines in June 2003 and settled in Round Rock. Mr. Hill is married to the lovely Kathleen Farrell of Carlsbad, New Mexico. They share their home with Pancho, the mongrel dog; Mr. Boots, the world’s grumpiest tuxedo cat; and Coco Chanel, the very stylish Calico kitten. Mr. Hill is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the
Navy League of the United States, the Marine Corps League,
and the Military Order of the Devil Dogs. During a meeting
of the Marine Corps League, Jimmy was asked to assist the
local League chapter’s Young Marine unit, the Capital Area
Young Marines. After serving three years as the unit’s
Executive Officer, Jimmy took the reins of the unit in
2008. He looks forward to serving as the Capital Area
commander for many more years where he can provide a
positive influence on the region’s young people. |
